Countless responsibilities and obligations both at home and in the office can be overwhelming for your employees. Recognizing that work-life balance is essential and important is one thing, but promoting this balance is even more critical to the well-being of your employees and the overall success of your business.

As an employer, you want the best for you workers. You want to make sure that they are able to stay focused at work and put in the best effort they can.

You also understand that family and personal life is important too. You understand that balancing everything going on in your life and the life of your employees can seem hard to achieve.

Fortunately, there are ways to help promote this work-life balance. Here are 5 ways you can help your employees successfully attain the healthy work-life balance they need:

#1 Talk With Your Employees

Asking your employees what they need is crucial to understanding and recognizing the changes that need to take place in the workplace. They know what needs improvement because they are the ones experiencing how the workplace functions on a daily basis.

Consider creating a survey for your employees to fill out consisting of questions like scheduling flexibility, scheduled hours, hours worked, and more. You can also consider speaking to each employee one-on-one to get their insight on improvements they think would enhance and better the work environment.

Recognizing which areas need improvement is the first step in resolving the stress being felt by your workers.

#2 Recognize Signs of Burnout

Job performance is affected by the state of well-being your workers are experiencing.

Feeling overworked or overly stressed is probably not something your employees will want to confront you about. They don’t want you to think that they are not capable of doing their job.

As an employer, recognizing that your employees are burnt out will help them to notice your concern for their well-being. What are some signs of burnout? Decreased productivity, constant absenteeism, obvious physical exhaustion, and increased rates of error are all signs that your employees may be experiencing burnout.

What are some solutions? Letting workers off early every now and then or giving them less projects to work on can make a huge difference in decreasing the stress they may be feeling.

#3 Allow Flexibility

Sometimes employees feel they must give all their attention to work responsibilities. In reality, their personal life requires a lot of their attention as well. Allowing more flexibility at work can promote a healthier work-life balance.

By approving flexible work hours or days, workers can give their attention to both work and personal life. One way to allow this flextime is by placing a total hour requirement for each week, but letting your employees decide how many hours they want to work each day. An example of this is an employee choosing to work 7 hours on Wednesday and 9 hours on Thursday. Clarify that it is the employee’s responsibility to reach the total required hours each week.

Other ways to promote flextime include allowing your employees to come into work during the hours that are most convenient, regardless of the time of day, or permit them to do certain work from home.

#4 Promote Health and Wellness

Make health a priority. Employees that are expected to work long hours usually suffer physically and mentally with their health.

As an employer, you can encourage a healthy lifestyle in a variety of ways. First, and most importantly, make sure to find a corporate health and wellness program that will offer the services your employees need to attain wellness and thrive. You can also consider holding optional classes and seminars that will educate your workers about healthy lifestyle changes and habits. You may even want to provide healthy and nutritious snacks for your employees to make sure they energizing themselves throughout the day. The bottom line is, when your employee is healthy and well, their performance will improve.

#5 Be the Example

Be sure your employees know that you value work-life balance by living a work-life balance yourself. Help your employees to recognize and understand family time is valuable, vacation time is important and that you support them making personal time a priority too. Be the one who works hard in the office and plays hard. Show them that it is good to enjoy personal time as long as they are making sure their work responsibilities are also being taken care of. If your workers notice that you value personal time, they will know it is alright for them to enjoy their personal time too.

You want the best for your employees. By helping them to find a balance between their work and personal responsibilities, you are demonstrating to them that you care for them as your employee and as a person. Show them you value their performance and well-being. Promote their health and wellness by giving them the tools they need to achieve a healthy work-life balance.
